Why So Serious?

I’ve heard from TV, read in newspapers and have had conversations with people regarding ride share driver and ride share rider relationships.  I’m not talking about friendships or actual relationships.  I’m talking about the business relationship.

When I first heard about ride share (LYFT/UBER), I understood it as a way for networking and getting to know the people in your city or town and earning money while driving them to their destinations in your own car.

I became a ride share driver before using the service as a rider.  The experience, at first, was awesome.  My very first rider was an editor from the RED EYE newspaper.  She was friendly, sat in the front seat and had a wonderful conversation with me.  The ride from her pick-up location to her destination was about 20 minutes and it was a pleasure driving her.  We exchanged business cards and she gave me 5 stars as I gave her 5 stars as well.

I’ve given around 1500 rides so far between driving for Uber and Lyft.   My experience with riders has changed since that first ride.  NOW, most riders get in my car and don’t say a word.

During the week, if I drive in the morning rush, most riders are just getting their bearings, getting ready for their workday and drinking their coffee.  I understand that, but a little courtesy goes a long way, even if it’s just a hello and thank you!

Driving the evening rush is a little better.  Some riders will talk a little but most just want to get home after their long day at work.  They seem to take their day’s frustrations out on my car!  Slamming doors when they get in and out of my car. (Check out my story Ride share Rants!)

The best is during the weekends when I drive from 8pm ’til 4am.  I take people to the bars or clubs and then take them home from the clubs and bars.   These people want to talk the whole ride!    Maybe alcohol has something to do with it!  LOL

Riders, why so serious?

I say, “Hello, welcome aboard!”  After my hello, I stay quiet until you talk to me.  Let’s network and get to know each other a little.  You never know who is driving you.  I’ve heard of some interesting people who decide to drive for Uber/Lyft.   Some of us have full time jobs you may be interested in.   Who knows!   You may need a dj (hello), maybe you want do the job I have but don’t know how to get there, I may have your answers.

Some of us enjoy a little conversation while driving.
